Presentation at Graduate School of Arts and Sciences' workshop
On October 14, 2014, Oleh Kotsyuba delivered a presentation at the Graduate School of Arts & Sciences' workshop titled "Traditionalism in Soviet Ukrainian Literature of the 1980s: Volodymyr Drozd's Lystia zemli (The Leaves of Earth)."
The presentation, attended by graduate students and faculty, focused on questions of socialist realism in the Soviet Union and Ukraine, circumstances of the literary process under conditions of Soviet censorship, and similarities between Russian "village prose," Georgian "historical prose," Ukrainian "chimerical prose" and magical realism. Oleh offered an analysis of Volodymyr Drozd's novel Lystia zemli (The Leaves of Earth) from the perspective of its contribution to the continuity between the late Soviet and early post-Soviet Ukrainian literature, its strategies of narration and linguistic innovation, thematic explorations, and its moral dimension.
